St. John The Evangelist – Karen

HomeSt. John The Evangelist – Karen

Welcome to St. john the Evangelist - Karen

St. John the Evangelist was established by his Eminence Maurice Cardinal Otunga, then Archbishop of Nairobi. It took off in 1995 when the Cardinal assigned the cordination task to the Parish of OurLady Queen-Karen, Fr. Pius Onyango who was a Holy Ghost Priest and since, has remained a Holy Ghost Parish. The Parish lies in the South tip of Nairobi, with Magadi road, Mbagathi river, Karen Road and Forest edge road as its frontiers. Within the environs lie Catholic University of Eastern Africa, St. Thomas Aquinas Semanary, the Tanaza College, and a lot of men and women Religious Communites and a population  of 1,500 baptsied Christians.

The parish is blessed with a few groups and Sodalities, which include Catholic Women Association, Catholic Men Association, Choirs, Youth group, Pontifical Missionary Childhood, Sacred Heart and several others.

The Parish was enacted in 1989 by the late Servant of God Cardinal Maurice Otunga when he was the Archbishop of Nairobi. However, it was not activated till 1995.

The Catholics who were attending Mass at the Spiritan House chapel organized themselves and incorporated those who attended Mass at Capuchin Franciscans on Bogani Road, those attending at the Shrine on Langata Road, and those attending at the Passionist Congregation on Ushirika Road. Together they formed a group that met Sundays at Spiritan house to start the Parish. As there was a Parish priest, we asked the Archbishop for help and he asked Fr Pius Onyango, Parish priest of Regina Caeli at Karen, to be attending the meetings to give guidance on the formation of the new Parish.

The church is situated along Bogani Road in Karen, Nairobi.
